How to Store Seasonal Tyres and TPMS Sensors
If you are using more than one set of tyres (summer and winter), you have likely had to figure out “WHERE” to store each set after a seasonal tyre change. However, have you ever considered “HOW” to store your seasonal tyres? Did you know that proper storage of your tyres can prolong their lifespan and therefore save you extra cash?
Below are 5 easy tips on how to store your tyres and TPMS sensors correctly and ensure you get the most life out of them.
1. Clean the Tyres Before Storing
Make sure to clean the tyres using a brush, water, and a special detergent. This will help to remove all the dirt and avoid any harmful effects that the grime can cause such as corrosion, material deterioration, etc. Make sure to dry the tyres properly after cleaning.
2. Bag the Tyres
Right after drying your tyres, make sure you wrap them in a plastic bag. This will help to further protect them from getting dirty and from other weather or environmental conditions such as sun, humidity, rain, etc. Bagging the tyres also makes it easier to carry them to their storage location.
3. Choose a Cool, Dry Storage Location
Make sure you the storage location is cool and dry, like a garage or climate-controlled basement. Try to avoid storing them outdoors or any place where they can be affected by heat, humidity, cold or water.
4. Store Them in the Correct Position
Positioning tyres correctly can be equally important, to ensure they don’t distort or get damaged. The best way to store tyres is to stack or hang them. If you are stacking them make sure they are not stacked too high and if you are hanging them, make sure they are secured properly.
5. Do Not Forget about the TPMS
When installing a brand-new set of wheels, you can have your existing TPMS sensors transferred to the new set, however, to avoid premature failure of the tyre pressure monitoring sensors, ask the service technician to replace the service kits of the sensors during each tyre service.
Before installing the tyres, make sure technicians check the TPMS sensor battery using a proper diagnostic tool and do a visual inspection of the sensors for any possible damages like deterioration, corrosion or etc.
